Richard Mille introduces the RM 33-03 Automatic

Richard Mille has introduced the new RM 33-03 Automatic, a model in which the sporty appeal of a tonneau-shaped watch meets the natural harmony of a round case.

A successor to the RM 33-02, this new reference brings greater complexity while preserving the ergonomic qualities of its predecessor.

At the heart of the RM 33-03 is the new skeletonised automatic calibre RMXP3. Measuring just 3.28 mm thick, this ultra-slim movement achieves its compact profile thanks to an off-centre monobloc micro-rotor crafted from solid platinum.

Mounted on ceramic ball bearings and winding in both directions, the rotor ensures efficient energy generation while keeping the movement’s dimensions minimal.

The variable-inertia balance operates at a frequency of 3 Hz (21,600 vibrations per hour). Four adjustable weights positioned around the balance wheel allow fine regulation without altering the hairspring’s length. This regulating system governs the energy released by the fast-rotating barrel, offering a power reserve of over 40 hours.

The baseplate is made from grade 5 titanium and treated with Titalyt, an electro-plasma oxidation process that improves surface hardness and corrosion resistance.

The bridges, also in titanium, are coated in black PVD. Together, these materials enhance rigidity and maintain the flatness essential for precision and smooth transmission in the gear train.

Surrounding the movement is a black PVD-treated titanium date disc. The semi-instantaneous date is displayed through a white aperture at 5 o’clock, with the disc appearing suspended over the calibre.

At 6 o’clock, a small seconds sub-dial adds a rare feature for Richard Mille, one not commonly seen across the brand’s models.

Further highlighting the movement’s three-dimensional architecture, the 18K 5N red gold numerals are mounted on rigid titanium rails positioned between the flange and the movement, seemingly floating above the calibre. Like the bridges, this complex construction demands extremely thin components and precise execution.

The RM 33-03 Automatic comes in two versions: full grade 5 titanium, or Carbon TPT with an 18K 5N red gold caseband.

Both measure 41.7 mm in diameter and just 9.7 mm in thickness, a slim profile that enhances wrist comfort, especially given the lightness of the materials used.

The tripartite case, secured by Richard Mille’s signature titanium spline screws, combines polished and satin-brushed surfaces for added contrast and refinement.

The strap echoes the case’s geometry, with indentations at 6 and 12 o’clock that underscore the dynamic design. A folding buckle in grade 5 titanium ensures a secure and comfortable fit.
