Limited to 50 pieces, this timepiece—whose name Hora Mundi is the Latin translation of “world time”—pays tribute to craftsmanship with a dial composed of two superimposed levels: one guilloché, the other sapphire.
Offered for the first time in Breguet gold, this Hora Mundi 5555 also debuts a dial decorated with phosphorescent enamel, the subject of a patent application. The artistic representation is inspired by NASA’s Black Marble, a nocturnal vision of the Earth.
Each of the 50 collectors will be able to personalise the cities assigned to the 24 time zones.
The new Marine Hora Mundi 5555 is based on the Hora Mundi 5557, introduced in 2022 and still part of the current collection. Like its predecessor, the 5555 features a 43.9 mm × 13.80 mm fluted case and is powered by the calibre 77F1 with pre-programmable instant-jump dual time zone, date, day/night indicator, and synchronised city display.
Beyond these shared traits, the 5555 distinguishes itself with remarkable details, most notably its exceptional dial, the result of an exclusive two-part construction.
The first element is a gold base dial decorated with a gradient shifting from sky blue to navy, evoking the merging of sea and sky that inspired the creation of this timepiece. The surface is finely hand-guilloché with meridians and parallels. Though flat, it creates the trompe-l’œil of a curved Earth: the guilloché lines converge towards the four cardinal points, producing a striking sense of roundness.
The second element adds depth. Designed to suggest a perspective from space (as if the wearer were observing Earth from the thermosphere) the guilloché base is overlaid with a translucent sapphire crystal, amplifying the dial’s visual impact.
The sapphire dial is hand-painted in three stages, on both sides. First, the continents are outlined in miniature enamel on the reverse side of the crystal, a delicate process requiring them to be painted in mirror image so they appear correctly when viewed from the front. This layer is then fired at high temperature.
Next, clouds are painted on the front side in enamel, also fired over a grand feu. Unlike the fixed continents, the clouds vary with each piece, giving every Hora Mundi 5555 a unique and lifelike atmosphere.
Finally, the cities that glow at night are added using miniature phosphorescent enamel rather than Super-LumiNova, a choice that combines artisanal craftsmanship with technical innovation in keeping with Breguet’s 250-year tradition.
For the first time, the Marine case is made of Breguet gold. Exclusively for this limited edition, its central attachment is polished. The case guarantees water resistance to 100 metres / 330 feet.
The back features the special 250th anniversary guilloché motif, known as Quai de l’Horloge. The sapphire crystal caseback, bearing the anniversary logo like the other models in the 250th anniversary collection, reveals the intimate workings of the calibre 77F1, whose oscillating weight is also made of Breguet gold for the first time.
Beating at a frequency of 4 Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour) and offering a 55-hour power reserve, this self-winding mechanical movement is fitted with a silicon escapement, resistant to both corrosion and wear.
In addition to the time and date, it indicates a second time and date pair for the time zone of one’s choice, based on one of the 24 cities each representing a time zone.
The solution is based on the principle of a mechanical memory with instantaneous display. After setting the time and date with the crown at 3 o’clock for a first city, the wearer sets the second city and its time zone with the push-button crown at 8 o’clock.
The mechanism then calculates the time and date by means of a system of cams, hammers, and an integrated differential. By pressing the pusher at 8 o’clock, the display switches on demand between the first and second time zones, automatically adjusting the date in both cases.
An indicator at 4 o’clock specifies whether the time zone displayed is in the day or night.
The calibre 77F1 is protected by several patents: one covering the dual time-zone mechanism; another for displaying a time zone on demand via the main pointer; a third for the programmable and reprogrammable mechanical memory wheel; and a fourth for the device displaying time via a trailing hand.
Paired with a navy blue alligator leather strap secured by an 18K Breguet gold triple-blade folding clasp, and delivered with an additional rubber strap, the new Breguet Marine Hora Mundi ref. 5555BH/YS/9WV is priced at €104,700. breguet.com
