A. Lange & Söhne has released the 1815 Tourbillon Ref. 730.094F in 950 platinum, a limited edition featuring a jet-black grand feu enamel dial entirely crafted in-house.

Introduced in 2014, the 1815 Tourbillon is notable for the intricate construction of its large tourbillon, which combines a stop-seconds mechanism with the complex ZERO-RESET function.

Prominently displayed in a wide aperture at 6 o’clock, the tourbillon improves rate accuracy through its rotation, which continually changes the position of the balance and compensates for the effects of gravity on the oscillation system.

In this model, the tourbillon is enhanced by two additional functions, both highly complex to realise. The stop-seconds device halts the tourbillon when the crown is pulled, allowing precise time setting, while the ZERO-RESET mechanism ensures that the seconds hand jumps instantly to zero.

Together, these patented mechanisms allow the watch to be synchronised with a reference timepiece or time signal with great accuracy.

The tourbillon bridge and the upper section of the cage are finished with black polish, a demanding technique achieved by hand using abrasive pastes on a tin plate until the surface alternates between mirror gloss and jet black, depending on the angle of view.

The 39.5 mm × 11.3 mm platinum case frames the enamel dial, created in-house from start to finish. The process involves shaping the white-gold base, applying crushed enamel pigments, multiple firing cycles, and a final polishing.

The circular aperture for the tourbillon is chamfered by hand, a delicate operation that requires great skill to avoid damaging the enamel surface. More than one hundred individual steps over several weeks are required to complete a single dial.

The dial is completed by the characteristic design of the 1815 family, with flush Arabic numerals and a peripheral railway-track minute scale.

The manufacture calibre L102.1 is visible through the sapphire-crystal caseback. Its refined decoration includes a diamond endstone in a screwed gold chaton on the fourth-wheel bridge, which is freehand-engraved.

The movement beats at 3 Hz (21,600 vibrations per hour) and offers a 72-hour power reserve. It features a freely oscillating Lange balance spring paired with a traditional screw balance, ensuring excellent rate stability.

At the centre of the tourbillon, the diamond endstone in its gold chaton creates a striking focal point. Once reserved for Lange’s finest 1A-quality watches, this traditional element now serves as the crowning detail of this mechanical masterpiece.

This is the fifth version of the 1815 Tourbillon. The model was first launched in 2014 with a 30-piece limited edition in platinum and an unlimited pink-gold edition. These were followed in 2015 by the 1815 Tourbillon Handwerkskunst, a 30-piece limited edition with exceptional dial and movement decorations. In 2018, Lange introduced a platinum version with a white enamel dial.
