Incorporating a breakthrough double impulse escapement, together with a twin gear train and two constant-force mechanisms, the Central Impulse Chronometer ‘InVerto’ by master watchmaker Bernhard Lederer brings the entire movement to the dial side, fully exposed to view.

During a recent visit to the Pisa 1940 flagship store in Milan, we had the pleasure of photographing this exceptional and very rare timepiece, and we are delighted to share the images.

As Italy’s largest watch retailer, Pisa 1940 has long been a benchmark for collectors worldwide. Several prestigious maisons — including Patek Philippe, F.P. Journe and IWC — have created exclusive editions for this historic boutique. 

The Bernhard Lederer Central Impulse Chronometer ‘InVerto’, like other creations from the independent watchmaker, is available to order through Pisa 1940’s online platform.

In this movement, the mechanism has been inverted, offering an uninterrupted view of its architecture while the watch is worn, with no components concealed.

Housed in a 44 mm x 12.2 mm case crafted from black DLC-treated stainless steel, the hand-wound Calibre 9018 InVerto comprises 212 components and beats at a frequency of 3 Hz (21,600 vibrations per hour), providing a 42-hour power reserve.

Visible through a panoramic sapphire crystal with double anti-reflective coating, this certified chronometer — validated by both the Besançon Observatory and the Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres (COSC) — showcases Lederer’s ingenious natural escapement.

It consists of two escapement wheels working in alternation, each powered by its own gear train and barrel, and each equipped with a 10-second remontoir d’égalité. These are connected to an anchor carefully engineered to minimise contact time.

The result is an exceptionally uniform transfer of energy to the balance wheel. Lighter impulses and reduced friction translate into improved chronometric performance, stable rate precision throughout the full power reserve, and greater durability of the mechanism.

The running seconds, a requirement for COSC certification, are displayed on the reverse of the watch.

Every detail of the movement, from bridges to mainplate, is finished in black, with hand-applied satin, sandblasted and brushed surfaces, complemented by polished chamfers. All components, including the hands, are produced in-house at the brand’s Saint-Blaise workshop by a team of over 25 artisans.

The Bernhard Lederer Central Impulse Chronometer InVerto (ref. CIC 9018) will be produced in a strictly limited series of 18 pieces.
