TAG Heuer presents the Carrera Astronomer with a reimagined moonphase display. Prices start from CHF 4,350

Born on the racetrack and shaped by a spirit of conquest, the Carrera collection has always been about pushing boundaries. With the new Carrera Astronomer, TAG Heuer expands that pioneering vision into space, presenting a lunar complication unlike any previously seen in the line.

This new chapter in astronomical watchmaking recalls a key moment for the brand. In 1962, astronaut John Glenn wore a modified Heuer 2915A stopwatch aboard NASA’s Friendship 7 spacecraft, marking the first time a Swiss timepiece reached orbit (to learn how this milestone shaped TAG Heuer’s legacy, read our feature article on the history of TAG Heuer timepieces). 

That mission connected Heuer precision with exploration beyond Earth, and the Carrera Astronomer builds directly on that remarkable achievement.

At its heart, the Carrera Astronomer is powered by the Calibre 7, a self-winding mechanical movement beating at a frequency of 4 Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour) with a 50-hour power reserve. 

Its moonphase display at 6 o’clock departs from the usual stylised imagery. A rotating disc presents seven lunar stages with scientific accuracy, flanked by two slender arrows that indicate both the current phase and its position within the 29.5-day cycle. 

Advancing every night at 1:00 AM, the disc moves in rhythm with the real lunar progression, offering a precise and visually engaging reading of the Moon’s journey.

The stainless steel case measures 39 mm in diameter, 12.16 mm in thickness and 45.2 mm lug to lug, proportions that create a balanced wrist presence while maintaining elegance. 

Water resistance to 100 metres / 330 feet is secured by a screw-down crown and caseback, while a domed sapphire crystal with double anti-reflective treatment ensures clarity from every angle.

The caseback itself is decorated with an astronomical observatory and a Victory Wreath, reinforcing the celestial inspiration of the design.

The Carrera Astronomer debuts in three executions. 

The first (ref. WBX2110.BA0044) is part of the permanent Carrera line and features a silver sunray-brushed dial framed by a black flange and a black moonphase disc.

Rhodium-plated applied numerals and faceted hands filled with white Super-LumiNova enhance legibility. It is offered on a seven-row steel bracelet with fine-brushed and polished finishing that recalls the fluidity of the “beads of rice” design from the 1960s. The retail price is CHF 4,550.

A second edition (ref. WBX2112.FC6615), limited to 500 pieces, brings sharper contrasts with a silver dial paired with a dark grey flange and turquoise accents on the numerals, hands and moonphase markings, all enhanced with Super-LumiNova. This model is fitted with a grey leather strap and priced at CHF 4,350.

The third model (ref. WBX2111.BD0002) adds warmth and refinement through a two-tone execution. The steel case is paired with 18K 5N rose gold plating on the flange, numerals and hands, while the silver dial and tone-on-tone moonphase disc create a harmonious backdrop for the precious details. 

Also limited to 500 pieces, it is presented on a steel and rose gold seven-row bracelet and priced at CHF 6,900.
