Limited to 100 pieces, the new Odysseus in Honeygold, reference 363.150, features a case measuring 40.5 millimetres in diameter and 11.1 millimetres in height. It is crafted from the manufacture’s exclusive Honeygold alloy and paired with a refined brown dial that complements the warm glow of the metal beautifully.
Thanks to a combination of mineral additives and a special heat treatment, Honeygold is harder than other gold alloys and exhibits a distinctive warm tone. Composed of gold, manganese, zinc, and silicon, it also offers enhanced resistance to corrosion and scratches, along with greater durability when compared to traditional yellow or rose gold.
The pushers for adjusting the date and day of the week are positioned above and below the screw-in crown, which helps ensure a water resistance of up to 12 bar, equivalent to approximately 120 metres or 400 feet.
A slim bezel surrounds the dial, allowing for a relatively large display. The refined contrast of brushed surfaces and polished bevels continues on the lugs and bracelet links, which are also made from 18-carat Honeygold.
The five-row bracelet is secured with a deployant clasp that features a practical adjustment system. By pressing a concealed pusher, the bracelet’s length can be extended or shortened by up to 7 millimetres without opening the clasp. Additional fine-tuning is possible by adding or removing individual links.
The hands and applied hour markers, both crafted from Honeygold, add further coherence to the design. The white numerals of the outsize date at 3 o’clock and the large day-of-week display at 9 o’clock provide a striking contrast against the brown dial.
The embossed grooves between the hour markers and on the subsidiary seconds track introduce visual depth and texture, while the softly gleaming inner dials offer an elegant counterbalance.
The hour and minute hands, along with the hour markers, are coated with a luminous material to improve visibility in dim lighting.
A subtle yet effective splash of colour is provided by the red number 60 on the peripheral minute track, printed on the bevelled gold-coloured flange.
The balanced composition of the dial is further enhanced by the design of the frame elements around the date and day windows, whose vertical edges follow the curvature of the bezel.
The watch is powered by the self-winding L155.1 DATOMATIC manufacture calibre, which beats at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour or 4 hertz. Its recessed poising screws are designed to reduce air friction and improve rate stability.
Unlike most other Lange calibres, the balance is held in place by a bridge secured at two points, rather than by a traditional balance cock. This bridge is manually engraved with a wave motif, a subtle reference to the watch’s water resistance.
Visible through the sapphire crystal case back, the movement is finished to the highest standards. The skeletonised rotor, partially coated in black rhodium, incorporates a centrifugal mass in platinum to enhance winding efficiency. The power reserve is 50 hours when fully wound.
The price of the A. Lange & Söhne Odysseus in Honeygold, reference 363.150, is available upon request. However, it is expected to be in the region of €110,000. alange-soehne.com
