After the release of the Type 1 Slim X, Ressence continues the celebration of its 10th anniversary with the new Type 5X. Without using "real" hands, its patented display indicates the hours, seconds and the oil temperature gauge in revolving discs, which in turn orbit inside the main disc of the minute display, which itself is continuously revolving.
Limited to just 40 pieces, this special edition was developed in collaboration with Eugenio Amos, founder of Automobili Amos, a brand that debuted in 2018 at the Grand Basel motor show with the Automobili Amos Lancia Delta Futurista, a car utilising an original Delta chassis as a base and completed with state-of-the-art technology and design practices.
This motoring-focused edition is strongly characterised by its unidirectional bezel, whose markings are directly related to the collaboration with Automobili Amos and the functioning of turbocharged engines.
The bezel is divided into two distinct parts. The first one is dedicated to the warmup of the engine (15min) - the S stands for Start, D for Drive and R for Race - while the other one is dedicated to the cooling of the Turbos (10 min).
The dial and sub dials have also evolved to be more car oriented and inspired by the Lancia Delta Futurista graphics. With the addition of new colours such as red and yellow, the olive-green softens and darkens in the Type 5X with the presence of oil that is used to guarantee a water resistance of 10 bar (approximately 100 metres / 330 feet). In fact, the complete ROCS movement - all 142 components, including the dial - is immersed in 37.5 ml of oil.
Thanks to the fact that a liquid cannot be compressed, this oil compensates for pressure underwater while at the same time keeping the ROCS components constantly lubricated. And since they are suspended in a liquid, the components are lighter and hence require less power to move, which in turn improves time-keeping.
The internal architecture of the watch comprises two halves - the upper chamber, comprising the ROCS display system, filled with oil; and a lower, dry chamber containing the self-winding 4 Hz (28,800 vph) movement, divided from the upper by way of a grade 5 titanium, hermetically-sealed membrane.
The 46mm (diameter) x 15.5 mm (thickness) case is made of polished grade 5 titanium. The two top and bottom sapphire crystals are domed and treated on both sides with anti-reflective coating.
The engraved indications are filled with Super-LumiNova. On the hour disc, at 10 o'clock, you can see the symbol that Ressence created for the 10th Anniversary collection, the fusion of an X (10 in Latin) and an hourglass.
The Type 5 has no crown - rather, the case-back is used both for winding (the power reserve is 36 hours) and setting the time of the watch. But, to satisfy the stringent water-resistance requirements and ISO 6425 standards, the Type 5 features the Ressence Compression Lock System, or RCLS, a system for the locking and compression of the gasket, with two positions, ‘lock’ and ‘setup’.
The Type 5X comes with a small rubber accessory enabling the driver to wear his watch on the side of his wrist, an ideal position while driving.
Delivered with two straps, one being made by the same Alacantara found in the Lancia Futurista and a second in green rubber, the Ressence Type 5X has a price of Euro 34,200 / US$ 36,500. ressencewatches.com
