Alpina introduces the Alpiner Extreme Automatic with California dial

The new Alpiner Extreme Automatic California by Alpina stands out for its sandblasted dial featuring a mix of Roman and Arabic numerals, a design known as the “California” layout. This distinctive style dates back to the 1930s and appeared on early Rolex and Panerai models.

The watch’s vintage appeal is reinforced by two dial options: brown with a darker outer ring (ref. AL-525BRG3AE6) and pine green with a darker outer ring (ref. AL-525GRG3AE6).

The California-style dial combines Roman numerals from 10 to 2 o’clock with Arabic numerals from 4 to 8 o’clock, rendered in a clear, generously sized typeface with vintage beige luminescent coating. A date aperture at 3 o’clock completes the display.

The broad hour and minute hands are also filled with vintage beige luminescent material, while the slender seconds hand is distinguished by a red triangle counterweight referencing the brand’s logo.

Excellent legibility is further ensured by a sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment on both sides.

Crafted from stainless steel, the 39 x 40.5 mm case measures 11.50 mm thick and features a round bezel secured by six screws with triangular heads, a signature Alpina design element.

The large screw-down crown with rubber grip is flanked by two guards and visually balanced by a corresponding projection on the left caseband. Water resistance is rated to 20 ATM (200 metres / 660 feet).

The six-screw caseback includes a sapphire crystal opening that reveals the self-winding AL-525 calibre (based on the Sellita SW200-1), with a black satin-brushed oscillating weight.

Beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz), the movement provides a 38-hour power reserve.
