Square watches are particularly challenging to develop for a number of reasons.
Mechanical calibres have wheels as their basic components and therefore they have a round geometry that is clearly more difficult to place harmoniously in a square case. It is not by chance that in most square or rectangular watches, movements are hidden.
Hublot took the challenge and, having found a consistent aesthetic style, decided to showcase both sides of its in-house HUB1280 Unico movement, a 354-component automatic chronograph beating at a frequency of 4 Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour).
The second challenge was the modular construction of the case, designed in line with Hublot's design code, with a central piece dressed with an upper and lower plate enabling a huge number of possible combinations, which makes waterproofness more difficult to achieve in case of a square shape.
Thanks to its experience, Hublot can guarantee water resistance up to pressure of 10 bar (approximately 100 metres / 330 feet).
The 42 mm x 14.5 mm case is strongly characterised by a square bezel with six (functional) screws placed at exactly the same places as on the round Big Bang. On either side of the Square Bang, we find the typical ‘ears’, not merely an aesthetic element but also a protection for the case.
At launch, Hublot presented five versions in different materials: black ceramic, titanium, King gold (a special league composed of 18K gold with 5% platinum added to make the colour more intense), titanium with black ceramic bezel, and King gold with black ceramic bezel. The All Black version is the only limited edition of the Square Bang Unico collection with a production of 250 pieces.
Protected by a sapphire crystal the openworked multi-level dial reveals the mechanisms of the movement, including the chronograph column wheel at 6 o’ clock.
Finishes reflect the DNA of the brand: polished and sandblasted screws, over-moulded rubber crown, push-pieces decorated with rubber ‘chocolate squares’, polished satin bottom and rhodium-plated or 5N gold-plated hands, depending on the model. The crown comes in over-moulded rubber.
Each model is matched to a black rubber strap and a folding clasp in the same material as the case. Its textured pattern - including four rows (like the four sides of the case) of raised squares (like the bezel) - was created especially for this model.
The patented “One Click” fastening system allows to change the look of the watch in one click with a large range of rubber and leather straps.
