Patek Philippe Calatrava 6196P: understated elegance in platinum

A “simple watch” can still be rich of character, thanks to refined details and impeccable finishes. This is certainly the case with the new Patek Philippe Calatrava Reference 6196P-001.

This model comes in a beautifully proportioned 38 mm x 9.33 mm case crafted from platinum. Its polished surfaces are complemented by satin-finished flanks, which highlight the profile of the slender lugs.

The beveled bezel frames a sleek opaline rose-gilt dial, on which the anthracite white gold hands and applied faceted "obus"-style hour markers stand out prominently.

Like all Patek Philippe models in platinum, this timepiece features a diamond set into the bezel at 6 o’clock.

Visible through the sapphire-crystal case back, the caliber 30-255 PS is beautifully finished with six bridges, one for each wheel or function, decorated with Geneva striping, chamfered edges, and polished finishes. This is the same movement used in the Calatrava "Clous de Paris" References 6119R and 6119G.

Operating at a frequency of 4 Hz (28,000 vibrations per hour) with a maximum deviation of -3/+2 seconds per 24 hours, this hand-wound movement offers a power reserve of 65 hours, or nearly three days. This performance is achieved using two mainspring barrels arranged in parallel.

Unlike barrels in series, which extend the power reserve, parallel barrels increase the torque by combining the output of both barrels.

The stop-seconds mechanism, which halts the balance when the crown is pulled out, allows for setting the time to the exact second. Pushing the crown back in reactivates the balance and restarts the movement.
