Greubel Forsey presented a new version of its Balancier Contemporain, a timepiece that the Swiss brand introduced in 2019 with the description: "The essence of Greubel Forsey in 39.6 mm".
In fact, the Balancier Contemporain was the first Greubel Forsey model with a moderately-sized case (39.6 mm diameter x 12.21 mm height) compared to much larger timepieces in their collection. Of course, without losing Greubel Forsey signature characteristics and aesthetics.
Following the initial white gold version, this model is now offered in a new 5N red gold case with a rich, multi-level contrasting dial.
The beautiful proportions of the case are accentuated by contrasting finishes: a fully polished bezel and lugs, with a satin-brushed caseband and caseback.
Above the bezel, the high-domed sapphire crystal adds further depth to the movement, composed of 255 hand finished parts.
This exclusive calibre is equipped with a large balance wheel (12.6 mm diameter) that, positioned at 6 o'clock, takes the spot light. Its reflection against the backdrop of a black-polished gold plate emphasises the sense of depth of the ensemble.
To enable fine adjustment of its moment of inertia, its balance rim is fitted with six gold mean-time screws, recessed in order to guarantee optimal aerodynamics by reducing air friction. The result is enhanced chronometric performance. The balance wheel stop function can be activated by pulling the crown.
At 2 o’clock we find the off-centre hour/minute dial, accentuated by the anthracite finish of the minute circle. Positioned on a raised tripod bridge, the hours and minutes are displayed by two blued steel hands with a hand-polished flat surface and countersinks.
At 8:30, the small seconds hand moves on a slightly higher level. Higher up, a hand-frosted bridge displays the 72-hour power reserve by means of a slender blued steel hand. A frosted and bevelled bridge reveals the barrel drum with Greubel Forsey engraving: it houses two series-coupled fast rotating barrels (1 turn in 3.2 hours), one of which is equipped with a slipping spring to avoid excess tension.
The caseback side of the new Balancier Contemporain demonstrates the exceptional craftsmanship of the brand. A circular engraved red gold disc is displayed in the centre, surrounded by a white gold bridge, which features the Atelier’s key values written in engraved and black-polished letters, along with the characteristic olive-domed jewels set in gold chatons.
Matched to a hand-sewn alligator leather strap, secured by a red gold pin buckle hand-engraved with the GF logo, the Greubel Forsey Balancier Contemporain in red gold has a price of CHF 195,000 (before sales taxes). greubelforsey.com
