Zenith - Defy Inventor

Zenith Defy Inventor
In 2017 Zenith announced a breakthrough innovation unveiling the Defy Lab, a timepiece issued in a 10-piece limited edition characterised by a radically new technology challenging the traditional  principle of the coupled balance and hairspring that is used by the large majority of mechanical watches.

The Defy Lab was powered by the ZO 342 movement where ZO stands for Zenith Oscillator, a monolithic regulating organ made of monocrystalline silicon coated with a layer of silicon oxide  measuring just 0.5 mm thick.

Today, the technology is moving beyond laboratory stage to reach a much wider public thanks to the Defy Inventor, whose self-winding Calibre 9100 is equipped with the patented oscillator.

Beating at the extremely high frequency of 18 Hz (compared to the usual 4 Hz of most mechanical movements) and endowed with a 50-hour autonomy, the single-piece Zenith Oscillator offers a number of benefits. Firstly, increased reliability, given that this unique ultra-thin element (0.5 mm) replaces the thirty or so components of a standard regulating organ and thus eliminates contact, friction, wear and deformation; and secondly, stability, since it is made of monocrystalline silicon and therefore insensitive to temperature variations and magnetic fields. In addition, its escape-wheel is made of flexible blades, a first in the watch industry.

Zenith Defy Inventor

The Zenith Oscillator is triple certified: for magnetic insensitivity (ISO-764), thermal insensitivity (ISO-3159) and chronometric precision (TIMELAB – Foundation of the Geneva Laboratory of Horology and Micro-engineering).

The innovative engine appears beneath the openworked construction of the dial. Broad hours and minutes hands sweep over the mechanism, while a slender star-tipped central sweep-seconds hand – equipped with a stop-seconds system enabling ultra-accurate adjustment – marks off the seconds.

The avant-garde dial is framed by a textured bezel crafted from Aeronith.  Made of open-pore aluminium foam and stiffened with a polymer, Aeronith is the lightest aluminium composite in the world (three times lighter than titanium).

Made of brushed titanium, another ultra light material, the 44 mm diameter case is water resistant to 50 metres / 165 feet.

Secured to the wrist by a black rubber strap with a midnight blue alligator coating, the Zenith Defy Inventor (ref. 95.9001.9100/78.R584) has a price of Swiss Francs 18,900. zenith-watches.com

  1. Incredible piece! I am a great fan and can't wait to have one in my hands. Not completely in love with the bezel, though.
