Last December, we reviewed the Eberhard & Co. Contodat Chronographe, capturing exclusive photography of the collection’s flagship complication. That review explored how the chronograph references the brand’s past with distinct 1970s vibes while staking a confident claim in the present.
The Contodat Collection was first unveiled at Watches and Wonders 2025, marking a milestone for Eberhard & Co. as its first series of sporty timepieces featuring integrated steel bracelets.
Alongside the chronograph, the range includes a time-only model—the Contodat Automatic—which shares the same heritage-inspired design language but with a leaner mechanical layout.
For this hands-on review, we take a closer look at the Contodat Automatic ref. 41156.04.
This specific version features an intriguing grey dial whose warm hue shifts significantly depending on how light hits the sunray (or "soleil") finish.
For those seeking different aesthetics, four other variations are available: blue (ref. 41156.01), green (ref. 41156.02), argenté (ref. 41156.03), and black (ref. 41156.05).
The dial layout is a characterising element of this model, defined by a small seconds subdial at 9 o’clock, visually balanced by a trapezoidal date window at 3 o’clock.
This framed aperture is a direct nod to the collection’s 1970s inspiration.
To enhance the "pop" of the subdial, the seconds hand and the "60" numeral are highlighted in a striking orange, a unifying theme across the collection.
The subdial and the dial's outer ring both feature an "azuré" finish, adding textural depth.
The hour and minute hands were developed specifically for this collection. They feature a three-dimensional structure that alternates between polished and textured surfaces, with a central section filled with luminescent material to match the applied indices.
Protected by a domed sapphire crystal with an internal anti-reflective coating, the dial offers excellent legibility in all lighting conditions.
The 316L stainless-steel case measures 39 mm in diameter and 11.30 mm in thickness.
It is fitted with a substantial screw-down crown embossed with the Eberhard “E,” contributing to a water-resistance rating of 10 ATM (100 metres / 330 feet). This makes the watch perfectly suited for daily wear.
The watch is offered exclusively with a new integrated steel bracelet, developed for seamless visual and functional continuity with the case.
The bracelet is secured by the 2CLICK clasp, designed to prevent accidental opening while remaining easy to operate.
It is finished with the Maison’s Shield emblem, a motif echoed in the design of the inner blades. With smooth edges and tight tolerances, the bracelet provides a solid, comfortable feel on the wrist.
Thanks to its compact dimensions and ergonomic focus, the Contodat Automatic easily slips beneath a shirt cuff.
For reference, the wrist shown in our photographs measures 17.8 cm (7 inches).
The screw-in solid caseback features a satin-brushed centre and a polished edge.
It is decorated with gold-coloured engravings, including the Latin phrase UBI TU IBI EGO (“Where you are, I will be”), symbolising the core values of the brand.
Beneath the caseback beats an élaboré-grade Sellita SW 290-1, a reliable self-winding calibre with hacking seconds operating at 4 Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour). It delivers a power reserve of approximately 38-41 hours.
The Eberhard & Co. Contodat Automatic is a time-only model of significant character. In a segment often crowded with "look-alike" designs, its distinctive case and asymmetrical dial layout set it apart.
It successfully combines a striking sporty aesthetic with the versatility required for everyday use.
From the meticulous execution of the integrated bracelet to the balanced proportions, every detail delivers a rewarding experience on the wrist.
The price of the Eberhard & Co. Contodat Automatic is €2,860. eberhard-co-watches.ch
