Petermann Bédat - 1967 Second Series

Young watchmakers Gaël Petermann and Florian Bédat created lot of buzz in 2020 with the release of their first model, a three-hand model named 1967 that won the Horological Revelation prize at the Grand Prix de l'Horlogerie de Genève 2020.

The date 1967 refers to the year in which the first quartz movement was launched. Of course, their watch is not powered by a quartz movement but it has one thing in common with it: the seconds hand advances in full steps of one second instead of the more usually smooth sweeping action of mechanical seconds, a feature that, in the high-end watchmaking world, is often referred to as "dead beat seconds".

This year, the talented duo is presenting the 1967 Second Series, a 25 limited edition crafted from Grade 5 titanium.

The elegant 39 mm x 10.70 mm case frames a semi-open dial whose central plate cut-outs highlights the visible rubies.

The hour, minute and second hands are manually bevelled and polished. The blue outer track is ideal to highlight the jump of the slimmer hand from one second to the other.

Enhanced by a black polished finish, the time setting components stand out beautifully at 3 o'clock.

Beating at a frequency of 2.5 Hz (18,000 vibrations per hour) and offering 36 hours of autonomy, the manufacture Calibre 171 is equipped with a black polished swan neck regulator that adjusts the rate.

Through the transparent sapphire crystal caseback, it is possible to admire the unusual architecture and the traditional Haute Horlogerie finishes.

The "dead beat seconds" feature is possible thanks the the Gafner system (from the name of its inventor Robert Gafner) that is composed of a special wheel and a very complex anchor that must be hand-crafted with a precision of one hundredth of a millimeter.
