The world’s first modern diving watch, the Fifty Fathoms was introduced by Blancpain in 1953. The watch was soon adopted by many navies around the world as well as by famous explorers like Jacques Cousteau.
To improve water resistance, Blancpain conceived a patented double sealed crown system to protect the watch from water penetration in the event that the crown were accidentally to be pulled during a dive. A second patent was awarded for the sealing system for the caseback. Additionally, the watch was equipped with a secured uni-directional rotating bezel that could be used to measure the time of a dive. For this invention, a third patent was awarded.
In 2018, for the first time in the history of the model, Blancpain introduced a Fifty Fathoms version featuring an instant-change large date complication displayed in two windows located at 6 o’clock, a function that Blancpain has often used in several models of its Villeret Collection.
This way, the new Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Grande Date delivers a solution that offers excellent readability thanks to the large size of the numerals, while also changing instantaneously without excess energy consumption from the running train of the watch. The date is adjustable via the crown.
The watch is powered by Blancpain’s base calibre 1315, which achieves a remarkable five-day power
reserve thanks to three mainspring barrels. The use of a non-magnetic silicium hairspring protects the movement from magnetic fields without the need for an inner soft iron case. Visible through a clear sapphire case back, the movement beats at a frequency of 4 Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour).
Water resistant to 300 metres / 1,000 feet, the 45 mm satin-finished titanium case features a unidirectional rotating bezel. Fashioned in ultra-hard sapphire, this domed bezel offers extraordinary scratch resistance.
