Hublot unveiled the MP-09 Rainbow Tourbillon Bi-Axis 5-Day Power Reserve, a special 8-piece limited edition of its Manufacture piece which represents one of Hublot's technological peak.

Combining a totally unique case shape with a singular representation of the tourbillon, the MP-09 Rainbow is further enhanced by a reproduction of the famous effect of coloured gemstones obtained by using coloured composites inserted into the mass of the 3D carbon case.

In the traditional technique, the human hand chooses the stones - diamonds, rubies, sapphires and emeralds - and then assembles them according to their colour; for the MP-09 Rainbow, each tiny insert in different shades has to be created one by one.

To achieve this result, the Nyon-based brand had to reinvent methods, tools, and the use of materials.

Thin bars of carbon are laid flat on the case, a few millimetres apart. Afterwards, bars of coloured composite are placed vertically into the gaps and protrude slightly from the carbon. This height difference is then filled with a third carbon mesh that raises all components to the same level. Both carbon and composites are threaded into the mass across all three dimensions: length, width and height.

To reproduce the brilliance of gemstones, Hublot developed a complete prism of infinite shades. The colour of each insert darkens slightly as it set within the carbon case. The surface of the case is entirely smooth and polished to the touch. Each insert is imperceptibly cropped with carbon, and polished and adjusted to the nearest micron.

Measuring 49 mm in diameter and 17.95 mm of height, the ultra light case houses the hand-wound HUB9009.H1.RA.B calibre beating at the frequency of 3 Hz (21,600 vibrations per hour) with a 5-day power reserve (120 hours). Comprised of 356 components, this movement is equipped with a hypnotic bi-axial tourbillon performing one complete rotation per minute for the first axis and a second rotation every 30 seconds for the second axis.
