Hands-on Review: DOXA SUB 300 COSC

Review of the DOXA SUB 300 COSC. Priced at Swiss Francs 2,450 with rubber strap or Swiss Francs 2,490 with the stainless steel “beads of rice” bracelet, the DOXA SUB 300 COSC is a watch of great appeal whether you choose it for its diving performances or just for its attractive look. Design, wearability and the possibility to alternate a steel bracelet or a rubber strap make the DOXA SUB 300 COSC a favourite of many divers.
Last August 12, DOXA announced the release of the new SUB 300 COSC, presenting it in 6 colours that can be matched to metal bracelets or colourful rubber straps for a total of 12 variations.

After providing an overview of all the six models (you can read it here), we had the opportunity to go hands on with three of them: the Searambler in silver, the Professional featuring the signature orange dial and the yellow Divingstar. We are now delighted to share our impressions and live pictures.

The key elements that made this classic design from the 1960s iconic are all there: the  cushion-shaped case, the patented bezel with two separate scales and the clear dial with the oversized minute hand.

DOXA SUB 300 COSC Searambler

Measuring 42.50 mm x 45.00 mm, the DOXA SUB 300 COSC is waterproof up to a pressure of 30 ATM (approximately 300 metres / 984 feet) and has a total thickness of 13.40 mm.

While you might think that this is just 0.60 mm less than the 14mm-thick 300T model offering water resistance to 1,200 metres / 4,000 feet, the difference is more evident. In fact, the case profile of the SUB 300 COSC is slimmer and more sloped than the 300T and the watch reaches the thickness of 13.40 mm with its box-type sapphire crystal while the SUB 300T features an almost flat sapphire crystal.

The result is a diver's watch that, thanks to its moderate weight and comfort on the wrist, will make you feel at ease whether you are wearing it for professional or recreational uses. On the wrist, it looks smaller than 42.50 mm.

Crafted from 316L stainless steel, the case alternates polished and satin-brushed surfaces highlighting the beautiful lines. The screw-down crown is decorated with the "DOXA fish" symbol in orange.

In position 0 the crown is tightly screwed down against the case. By unscrewing it, you can wind the watch in position 1, set the date in position 2, and set the time of the day in position 3.

Reinforcing the vintage look of the watch, the box-type sapphire crystal echoes the domed plexiglass of the first SUB generations while ensuring scratch resistance and, thanks to the antireflective coating, perfect readability of the dial.

The white indices and the hands are treated with Super-LumiNova luminescent coating for improved legibility, even in poor light conditions and during dives. The date window at 3 o'clock completes the indications.

The patented unidirectional rotating bezel moves very precisely thanks to its perceptible 120 clicks. It allows the diver to calculate and monitor no-decompression dive times.

The outer ring shows the given dive depths. The inner ring shows the time in minutes at the depths indicated on the outer ring. The Descent Marker (the two dots) is used to set the dive duration starting at the current time. Once set by aligning it with the two dots, the large minute hand indicates how many minutes the wearer can remain at the desired depth and return to the surface without a decompression stop. Differently from the 300T that expresses the given depth in feet, the SUB 300 COSC uses the metric scale for its bezel.

The watch is now powered by a COSC-certified version of the self-winding mechanical movement ETA 2824-2. The COSC (“Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres”) certification guarantees the timepiece’s chronometric performance and scrupulous compliance with the highest standards in terms of precision, reliability, shock resistance, automatic winding and ease of maintenance. Beating at a frequency of 4 Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour), the movement has an autonomy of 38 hours.

The screw-in solid case back is engraved with a sailing boat, an appropriate symbol to represent the special link of this model with the sea world.

The SUB 300 COSC can be matched to the iconic ‘beads of rice’ stainless steel bracelet secured to the wrist by a folding clasp with the embossed DOXA fish logo or to the the new high-quality rubber strap, offered in a choice of five colours: black, blue, turquoise, orange and yellow. This is equipped with a folding clasp with a diver’s extension that can increase the total length by up to 15 mm, useful  for quick adjustment over a wetsuit or more simply when the weather changes significantly. The lug width is 20 mm.

  1. The only doubt I have is which color to choose. I love silver, orange and blue.
