IWC introduced the new Portugieser Hand-Wound Tourbillon Day & Night IW545901 in Armor Gold with an Obsidian lacquered dial. Price €87,500

At Watches and Wonders Geneva 2024, IWC introduced the new Portugieser Hand-Wound Tourbillon Day & Night IW545901, along with several other novelties in the Portugieser collection, including the Portugieser Eternal Calendar and the revamped Portugieser Automatic 42.

The Portugieser Hand-Wound Tourbillon Day & Night combines a polished and brushed 18-carat Armor Gold case, measuring 42.4 mm x 10.8 mm, with an Obsidian lacquered dial and gold-plated hands and gold appliques for a strikingly elegant appearance.

Thanks to its enhanced microstructure, Armor Gold exhibits significantly greater hardness and wear resistance compared to conventional 5N gold.

Positioned at 6 o’clock, the flying minute tourbillon consists of 56 parts and weighs only 0.675 grams. 

The balance wheel and the pallet lever are placed inside a small cage that rotates around its axis once every minute, thus reducing the influence of gravity on the oscillating system of the watch, thereby increasing its accuracy. 

The pallet lever and escape wheel are made of silicon and treated with the Diamond Shell coating technology to reduce friction and improves the flow of energy in the movement, contributing to the remarkable power reserve of 84 hours (3.5 days). 

Thanks to the integrated tourbillon stop, the mechanism can be halted entirely, allowing for precise time setting down to the second.

At 9 o'clock, the innovative day and night display shows the cycle of day and night with the help of a small sphere, featuring a dark and bright side, that rotates around its axis once every 24 hours. 

As the movement is hand-wound and has no oscillating mass, the small globe is visible from both the dial and movement sides, each protected by sapphire crystals with double antireflective coating.

Operating at a frequency of 4 Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour), the hand-wound IWC-manufactured 81925 calibre features a partly skeletonised gold-plated base plate, providing a clear view of the barrel and other internal components. The movement is elaborately finished with circular Geneva stripes. 

The watch is fitted with a finely crafted curved black alligator leather strap from Santoni, a renowned Italian manufacturer of luxury shoes and leather accessories.
