A Swiss made tourbillon watch at less than CHF 15,000?

Tourbillon watches are usually very expensive. They can rarely be found below Swiss Francs 60,000 with the majority of models being on sale at prices which exceed Swiss Francs 100,000.

It is easy to understand why the announcement that, at the end of 2015, Tag Heuer will launch a tourbillon chronograph priced at just Swiss Francs 14'900 created big surprise.

Based on the modular case introduced with the Carrera Calibre Heuer 01 model, the future Tag Heuer Tourbillon Chronograph will feature a COSC-certified automatic movement beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour and offering 64 hours of power reserve. This movement will be produced in Chevenez, at the production site originally destined to the CH80 movement. Tag Heuer's CEO Jean-Claude Biver expects sales of 500 to 1,000 units per year for this model.

Of course, most watchmakers will not be happy about this move as it might reduce the prestige of tourbillon watches (and profit margins). On the other hand, it is a legitimate ambition for any Research and Development team trying to reduce the access point of technologies.

For sure, this will be a hot topic in the second half of the year.
