Review: Atelier Wen Inflection

Our hands-on review of the Atelier Wen Inflection: full-tantalum integrated-bracelet watch with Grand Feu enamel dial. Price €26,000

Atelier Wen has steadily earned a reputation for meticulous craftsmanship, and the Inflection — introduced at the end of 2025 — underscores the brand’s ambition.

This fully tantalum, integrated-bracelet watch pairs an uncommon, dense metal with a lustrous Grand Feu enamel dial, demonstrating a rare harmony of material innovation, artisanal skill, and refined design.

Hands-on review of the Atelier Wen Inflection

Following our initial overview of the three editions — the green Yōu (幽), limited to 30 pieces, and the black Mò (墨) and blue Yuān (渊), both joining the permanent collection — we spent several days with the latter.

Distinguished by its midnight-blue enamel dial with white Arabic numerals and rhodium-plated leaf-shaped hands, the Yuān exemplifies the subtle elegance that defines the Inflection.

Hands-on review of the Atelier Wen Inflection

When you first handle the Inflection, the uniqueness of its material immediately stands out. The watch is crafted entirely from pure tantalum, a rare, non-ferrous, and non-magnetic metal celebrated for its exceptional corrosion resistance, high melting point, and density of 16.69 g/cm³ — just slightly lighter than platinum.

Its dark bluish-grey tone gives the watch a presence that is simultaneously discreet and unmistakable, while the metal’s hardness and biocompatibility make it hypoallergenic and durable.

Hands-on review of the Atelier Wen Inflection

In watchmaking, tantalum is extremely rare, typically confined to cases due to the difficulty of machining. The Inflection, as the first permanent collection of bracelet watches made entirely in tantalum, represents a noteworthy milestone.

The finishing on both case and bracelet is especially impressive: Atelier Wen alternates brushed, frosted, and mirror-polished surfaces across concave and convex forms, creating a dynamic play of light that animates the watch from every angle.

Measuring 40 mm x 10.2 mm, the case is equipped with a screw-down crown, embossed with the brand’s emblem, that ensures a water resistance rating of 10 ATM (approximately 100 metres / 330 feet).

Protected by a double-domed sapphire box crystal with five layers of anti-reflective coating, the midnight-blue enamel dial reveals a deep, lustrous surface that contrasts beautifully with the white numerals and rhodium-plated hands.

Crafted in Kong Lingjun’s Beijing workshop, the dial is produced using the demanding Grand Feu technique: quartz, feldspar, borax, and other minerals are melted, quenched, ground into powder, and applied as a paste onto silver 925 dial blanks.

Each layer is fired at 750–850°C, polished, and built up to six times, with roughly half of the dials failing during the process.

The numerals, designed by Lee Yuen-Rapati, enhance legibility and balance, while the three-dimensional leaf-shaped hands, with their subtle curvature, catch the light and add a sense of movement to the dial.

A defining feature of the watch is its integrated bracelet, which tapers elegantly from 22 mm at the case to 18 mm at the clasp.

The combination of brushed, frosted, and mirror-polished surfaces emphasises the natural lustre of tantalum, most vivid on the curved and polished sections.

The bracelet is fitted with a double-folding clasp with double safety push-buttons and features a proprietary, patent-pending on-the-fly micro-adjustment system adjustable to four positions, activated via the comfort-extension button adorned with the brand’s logo.

The telescopic deployant blade further improves wearability, while quick-release spring bars allow the bracelet to be swapped for a strap quickly and easily.

Defined by balanced proportions and ergonomic design, the Inflection offers a refined wrist presence that transitions effortlessly across daily settings.

For reference, the wrist shown in our photographs measures 17.8 cm (7 inches) in circumference.

When we removed the Inflection to wear a steel-bracelet watch from another brand, the difference was immediately noticeable — a tangible sense of downgrade in weight, colour tone, and presence.

The watch’s wearability is further elevated by tantalum’s high thermal conductivity. Unlike steel, which can retain a cold "shock," tantalum quickly matches the wearer’s body temperature, resulting in a sensation that feels more integrated and natural.

In high temperatures, this conductivity ensures the watch remains comfortable, dissipating heat rather than trapping it against the skin.

Turning the watch over, the Inflection reveals a customised Girard-Perregaux GP03300 calibre, pairing robust mechanical reliability with refined decorative touches.

Designed by Alfred Chan in collaboration with Sidoine Lescauville and the Girard-Perregaux team, the bridges feature sweeping curves inspired by classical Chinese wind motifs, partially skeletonised and finished in ruthenium with polished bevels, sharp angles, and wave-like côtes de Genève radiating from the centre.

Black-polished screws and rose-gold-filled engravings add further refinement.

Atelier Wen Inflection, the movement

The two-part rotor combines a tungsten oscillating weight with five rose-gold-plated skeletonised spokes echoing the design of the bridges.

As it rotates, the alignment of these elements creates a dynamic visual effect through the sapphire caseback.

Atelier Wen Inflection, the movement

Just 3.36 mm thick, the automatic GP03300 runs at 4 Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour), offers a 48-hour power reserve, stop-seconds functionality, and regulation in five positions and to temperature, ensuring stable chronometric performance.

Atelier Wen Inflection, the movement

Given the complexity of the Inflection — from tantalum finishing to Grand Feu dial production — annual output is limited to approximately 100 pieces. The first year will see 30 pieces of the launch edition Yōu and 70 shared between Mò and Yuān. Allocation will therefore be handled through an application process.

Prices are set at €26,000 / US$29,800 for the full-tantalum bracelet version, with an additional strap included, and €17,200 / US$19,800 for the FKM sailcloth strap-only version.

Atelier Wen Inflection, the movement

After spending time with the Atelier Wen Inflection, it becomes clear that the watch is more than the sum of its individual components.

The rare and tactile character of tantalum, the depth and refinement of the Grand Feu enamel dial and the carefully executed finishing across the case and bracelet combine to create a piece with a strong and distinctive identity.

The customised Girard-Perregaux movement complements the watch perfectly, providing mechanical quality and a decorative architecture that integrates naturally with the design language of the piece.

Produced in very limited numbers and requiring significant artisanal effort, the Inflection stands as a compelling demonstration of Atelier Wen’s ambitions and capabilities, confirming the brand’s growing presence in the landscape of independent watchmaking. atelierwen.com
