German watchmaker Moritz Grossmann recently released a new limited edition of its Backpage, a model that brings the key elements of the movement on the dial side so that the wearer can admire the beauty of the mechanics while wearing the watch.

To obtain this result, the hand-wound calibre 107.0 had to be redesigned for reverse rotation sitting ‘upside down’ in the case.

An ensemble of deep blue, polished steel and gold elements, the partially openworked dial of the Backpage Blue displays details such as the slowly beating (18,000 vibrations per hour) Grossmann balance, the hand-engraved balance cock and the 3-band snailing on the ratchet wheel.

An additional wheel between the crown wheel and the ratchet wheel reverses the entire drive train with respect to the rotation of the mainspring barrel. The wheel train runs in the right direction thanks to the mirrored escapement and the mirrored oscillation system – also including the balance

spring coiling direction.

The 41 mm x 11.35 mm platinum case features a large crown for setting the time and winding the watch (the autonomy of the Backpage is 42 hours when fully wound). 

When the user pulls the winding crown, the Grossmann winder stops the movement. In order to restart it, the wearer must press the push button at 4 o’clock. This solution helps setting the time with the highest accuracy by avoiding any possibility to alter the positions of the hands.

The view of the back displays the functional sequence of the winding mechanism, which is openly

integrated into the wheel bridge.
