Hands-on Review: Glashütte Original PanoMaticLunar

Review Glashutte Original PanoMaticLunar. We had the opportunity to spend some time with the PanoMaticLunar. The new Glashütte Original PanoMaticLunar rose opaline is available with pin-buckle or folding clasp (ref. 1-90-02-12-32-30) with prices of Euro 9,400 and Euro 9,700, respectively. Extremely appealing considering the quality and the prestige of the timepiece. Hands-on with the Glashuette Original PanoMaticLunar.
With its asymmetrical dials, the Pano collection by Glashütte Original is one of the most iconic of the Saxon watchmaker.

Glashütte Original PanoMaticLunar

We recently had the opportunity to spend some time with the PanoMaticLunar Rose Opaline, a 50-piece limited edition that combines a classical round case in stainless steel to a gorgeous-looking dial displaying not only the time but also the date of the month and the moon phases.

Glashütte Original PanoMaticLunar

When you handle this model, the eye is immediately attracted by the warm rose opaline hue of the dial that creates a perfect contrast with the blue of the applied hour markers, the moon phase display and the sword-shaped hands. The rose colour has different nuances depending on the surrounding environment and how the light hits the surfaces.

Glashütte Original PanoMaticLunar

The special colour is the result of a special galvanization procedure performed in-house in the dial manufactory of the brand in Pforzheim in Germany.

The process involves placing the dial for a precisely specified length of time in a galvanic bath under a constant electrical charge in order to achieve the desired soft hue. The dialmakers need a great deal of experience and concentration in order to produce identical results with the same high quality for the entire edition.

Despite the asymmetry of the dial, the positioning of the indications gives a sense of harmony.

The self-intersecting auxiliary dials for hours and minutes and, below, small seconds are aligned along a vertical axis within the left half of the dial.

The sword-shaped hands indicating hours and minutes are filled with Super-LumiNova for enhanced visibility even in poor light conditions. Both sub-dials are enriched by a "snailed" decoration.

On the right, the Moon Phase curved window at 2 o'clock visually balances the signature Panorama Date at 4 o'clock. The silhouette of the silvery moon is set off by a starry, galvanic blue sky.

A fine-toothed gear guarantees the high precision of the moon phase indication: once correctly set, and assuming that the watch runs continuously, it will not require any manual adjustment for the next 122 years!

Perfectly readable thanks to its white numerals on blue discs, the Panorama Date gives an example of the attention that this brand pays to even the smallest details. In fact, the two numerals defining the date are not separated by a central vertical bar. This is possible because the two concentric display discs are mounted on the same level, a more complex solution to achieve but definitely a more elegant one.

The terms “Panoramadatum” (Panorama Date), and "Mondphase" (moon phase) are presented in German, as a reminder of the watchmaker’s origins.

Embossed with the double G, a symbol of the brand, the crown has 3 positions: position 0 (when the crown is positioned against the case) to wind the movement, position 1 to adjust the date by rotating it counterclockwise, and position 2 to adjust the time.

The moon phases can be set using the corrector at 2 o’clock.

The satin-brushed caseband of the Glashütte Original PanoMaticLunar

The amazing dial is protected by a sapphire crystal and framed by a 40 mm round case crafted from stainless steel and waterproof up to 5 bar (approx 50 metres / 165 feet). A detail that we love is the concave bezel, less prone to scratches than a convex one.

The lines of the case are highlighted by alternating polished and satin-brushed surfaces: the bezel and the top of the lugs are polished while the caseband is satin-brushed.

Thanks to its ergonomically designed lugs, the watch sits comfortably on the wrist.

The case back is polished and fitted with a transparent sapphire crystal to display the excellent finishes of the manufacture movement.

The self-winding Calibre 90-02 beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour and offers 42 hours of power reserve.  It sports the typical three-quarter plate construction enhanced by Glashütte stripe finish, blued screws and the hand-engraved balance cock with duplex swan-neck fine adjustment.

The skeletonized off-centre rotor features an oscillating weight in 21-ct gold decorated by the double G-logo, also used for the crown.

The Glashütte Original PanoMaticLunar in stainless steel can be matched to a blue Louisiana Alligator leather strap with a pin buckle (ref. 1-90-02-12-32-01) or a folding clasp (ref. 1-90-02-12-32-30) with prices of Euro 9,400 and Euro 9,700, respectively. Extremely appealing if you consider the quality and the prestige of the timepiece.

This model can also be fitted with a stainless steel bracelet (ref. 1-90-02-12-32-70). In such case, the price is Euro 10,800.
