Blancpain - Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe with plasma ceramic case

The three-hand model of the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe is now available in a new version characterised by a plasma gray ceramic case.

The plasma manufacturing process transforms ceramic by forging it in an oven at incredibly high temperatures. The result is a gray material which offers the benefits of high-tech ceramic with the appeal of a metallic look – without using any metal at all.

Plasma gray ceramic was previously used for the Bathyscaphe Chronographe Flyback Ocean Commitment that was launched in 2014 (we wrote about it here).

The unidirectional bezel, which can be rotated with defined clicks in a counter-clockwise direction, is also crafted from plasma gray ceramic and enhanced by a blue ceramic insert which features Liquidmetal hour markers, an alloy which offers exceptional hardness and corrosion resistance.

The presence of a luminous index located on the bezel, serving to enhance readability during dives, is faithful to the original version of the Bathyscaphe, which first appeared in the late 1950s in both men’s and women’s versions.

The 43 mm case frames a deep blue dial with sunburst finish which is completed by rectangular hours and minutes hands, a large seconds hand also serving as an indicator that the watch is running, and a small date aperture at 4:30. Hands and hour markers are generously treated with Super-LumiNova for enhanced legibility even in poor light conditions.

The new Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe is powered by the self-winding calibre 1315 beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour and featuring three series-coupled mainspring barrels for five days of power reserve.

Displayed through a sapphire crystal case back, this movement is fitted with a balance-spring in silicon which offers several benefits. In fact, its low density makes it particularly light as well as resistant to shocks and magnetic fields. These properties ensure the almost perfect geometry of the balance-spring, thereby improving the isochronism of the movement and consequently the precision of the watch.

Water-resistant to 30 bar (equivalent to 300 meters / 990 feet), the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe with the new plasma ceramic case (ref. 5000-0240-O52A) is offered with two strap options, a three-ring NATO strap or a sail canvas version. Its retail price is Euro 12,180 / US$ 12,800. blancpain.com
