Ressence - Type 1 Genesis

We first wrote about the Ressence Type 1 in March 2014 here. The timepiece conceived by Belgian industrial designer Benoît Mintiens brought something new in the watch industry surprising for the lack of conventional hands.

In fact, the time is displayed via the patented, 107-part Ressence Orbital Convex System (ROCS1) - a mechanism where the "hands" are in fact markings on orbiting discs, or, more accurately, rotating discs within discs. Each of the hour, second and day indication discs rotates on their own axis, while simultaneously rotating 360° every 60 minutes inside the complete dial which rotates to display the minutes.

Ressence is now presenting a new edition of the model, the Type 1 Genesis, characterised by parts which are used as they come off the production line, without further finishing, except for the sandblasting of the dial and the galvanic treatment of the hands needed to add contrast.

Differently from the original Type 1, the hands are not coated with Super-LumiNova. Even the barenia calf leather strap is untreated, so will mark and change colour naturally.

As the founder and designer Benoît Mintiens explains, the goal of the project was to to "de-materialise" the watch in order to express time in its purest possible way.

Since there are no hands, the domed sapphire glass is very close to the curved dial and extends to the very edge of the case.

Another distinctive feature, the watch has no crown. Winding and setting is performed slowly turning the case-back itself with benefits in terms of aesthetics and ergonomics. This way, the watch also will fit equally well on either wrist.

Lugs and case are seamlessly integrated as they are milled in one action from the same grade 5 titanium block. The case, offering a water resistance of 1 ATM, has a diameter of 42 mm and a thickness of 13 mm.

The movement is the Swiss automatic in-house calibre ROCS1 beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour and offering a power reserve of 36 hours.

Issued in just five pieces to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the brand, the price of the Ressence Type 1 Genesis is Euro 18,750. ressence.eu
