We have all heard of the incredible record of Felix Baumgartner who jumped out of a capsule suspended from a balloon in the stratosphere at an altitude of over 128,100 feet / 39,045 kilometres becoming the first person to break the sound barrier - which is about 690 mph/1,110 kph - by topping a maximum speed of 833 mph/1,342.8 kph.
As one of the main sponsors of the mission, Zenith launched the El Primero Stratos Flyback Striking 10th timepiece.
Specially adapted for the mission, the El Primero was on the Baumgartner’s wrist during his jump. Watches and cockpit flight instruments were subjected to abrupt variations in pressure, intense vibrations and violent accelerations – from 9 Gs to 11 Gs.Thanks to its robust construction, the El Primero Stratos could withstand it all.
The watch is powered by an ultra-quality El Primero 4057B Calibre self-winding mechanism. It oscillates at the super-high frequency of 36,000 beats per hour, which makes it famous in the watchmaking world. The case of the new El Primero is made of stainless steel with a ceramic bezel.
A case diameter of 45.5 mm and a large dial with hands and markers covered with Super-LumiNova offer a great readability, even in the most extreme conditions. The dial features three chrono sub-dials in different colors and a central flyback chronograph hand, counting time intervals with 1/10th of a second accuracy. The flyback mode enables instant resetting of the chronograph functions in one smooth, easy move.
The case-back is engraved with the Baumgartner’s motto, “Learn to love what you have been taught to fear”.
The El Primero Stratos Flyback Striking 10th is protected with sapphire crystal with double glare-proof treatment and it is water-resistant up to 100 meters (330 feet).
